Team Players: Communication and Trust

THE NEW YORK TIMES, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2011: OPENERS

CORNER OFFICE: RICHARD D. FAIN INTERVIEW, By Adam Bryant

Richard D. Fain is chairman and C.E.O. (Chief Executive Officer) of Royal Caribean Cruises.  The following is the final answer to a long interview at nytimes.com/businessday.

In answering a question about hiring, Mr. Fain looks for a “knowledge base” and why potential hirees have been successful. Additionally, he says:  “To be successful on a team, the players have to trust one another and that means that there needs to be a level of openness, and openness tends to expose you.  It makes you vulnerable.  I’d like to see that the person I’m talking to is willing to be open–basically, do they have integrity?

What is true in business, is true in sports.
