This Wall Street headline and sub-headline uses three sports metaphors or idioms: to play offense is a general sports idiom used by many sports; to kick off is used in football when a team is turning over the ball to the opposing team; a blitz (from the German term blitzkrieg) is used by the defending team’s men to rush the quarterback, who has the ball.
